Mary Ann Hotaling: Ms Veteran America 2020 - Full Bio

Mary Ann Hotaling is  a proud first-generation American , born and raised in New Jersey.  Her father immigrated to America from Portugal and mother from Brazil.   After graduating from Seton Hall University on a 4-year Army ROTC scholarship, she was commissioned as a 2LT in the Medical Services Corps.

She has served both stateside and overseas, to include a humanitarian mission in Bosnia~Herzegovina. While deployed, she also taught several college courses to young soldiers pursuing their bachelor’s degree.   She has also served as the Chief of Military Personnel at William Beaumont Army Medical Center.

After serving for 5 years, she went back to school to become a certified teacher and also earned her master’s degree in Education Leadership.  After graduating first in her class, she began her career teaching our country’s most precious resource: our children.  She has  been an educator for 18 years to include teaching 3rd and 5th grade, Music, Reading Intervention, as well as serving as an assistant principal at two different duty stations.

Most recently, her family moved to Northern Alabama.  She is currently serving as the English Language Learner Collaborative Specialist.  She is responsible for overseeing the curriculum, instruction, and assisting with acclimation to about 1400 students.

Mary Ann also is committed to serving any community she is a part of at a new duty station.  Her family initiated collections for personal hygiene products for battered women’s shelters in Florida, Missouri, and Kansas as well as collecting diapers through Kansas City Catholic Charities. In addition, she has also collected clothes for the underprivileged through Alliance Against Family Violence.

She also helped Hurricane Harvey victims receive new clean clothes, school supplies, and monetary donations to replace what was lost in the natural disaster.  She has also volunteered through Habitat For Humanity, The Lions Den Clothes Pantry, as well as American Heart Association.

As the newly crowned Ms. Veteran America, she has already raised over $26,000 for our homeless female Veterans.
